Dead or Alive?
When Doctor Who was cancelled in 1989, many fans couldn’t believe it and hoped the show would return. As the years passed, some became frustrated, feeling the BBC and media didn’t care about the show. Fans tried to bring it back, seeing the 1996 TV Movie as a sign of hope, and many joined campaigns or wrote letters. The TV Movie, which starred Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor, was co-produced by the BBC, Universal, and Fox in an attempt to revive the show, especially for an American audience. Although it didn’t lead to a full series, it introduced a new Doctor and kept the possibility of a return alive.
Eventually, it became clear the show wasn’t coming back in the same way, which made fans feel sad. But even without new episodes, fans kept the spirit of Doctor Who alive by reading books, listening to audio dramas, attending conventions, and even creating their own projects. Big Finish Productions started releasing full-cast audio dramas in 1999, bringing back classic Doctors and companions in new adventures.
One notable production from those years was Dimensions in Time, a special fundraising episode which aired in 1993 for Children in Need, featuring several former Doctors. Though it was long regarded as a very bad, light‑hearted, non‑canon crossover between Doctor Who and EastEnders, it might have been unexpectedly canonized in The Reality War through a flashback. This shows how even the most unusual pieces of Doctor Who history from this hiatus are still embraced by the series today.
Although I could easily spend hours discussing the many Big Finish audio dramas featuring the Eighth Doctor, the vast amounts of novels, fan-made films, and countless other projects that kept the Doctor Who flame alive during the Wilderness Years, it would take me an eternity to review them all. For now, as you know, I’m committed to focusing on reviewing televised episodes or movies which are part of the canon. This section, therefore, will be limited to the one credible, canonical TV product of the era: the Doctor Who TV Movie. Perhaps one day, I’ll extend my scope to include other works like Dimensions in Time. But for now, I’ll stick to the TV Movie as the definitive piece from this time.
