An Adventure in Criticism and Admiration
WHOniversal Review is a place where I’ll be sharing my thoughts on every episode of Doctor Who, and perhaps, in time, the spin-offs as well.
Just keep in mind, these reviews are based on my own experience, opinion, and how I understand each episode. Every viewpoints are valid, of course, as long as it’s based on facts.
Any negative criticism offered here is given with full respect for the immense effort that goes into producing quality television, something Doctor Who has consistently managed to do in the face of no small number of challenges.
At times, I may be more critical than usual. That’s only because I care deeply about the show, and I don’t want my affection for it to taint my judgement or result in empty praise. These reviews aim to be thoughtful, honest, and above all, meaningful.
Scoring the Whoniverse
For each Doctor Who episode I review, I use a personal rating system out of 10 points to support a full, written review. This system helps me stay consistent and look at different parts of the episode separately.
Story and plot are worth 2 points, focusing on how strong, clear, and engaging the episode is. Character development is 1.5 points, based on how well the Doctor, companions, and others are written and if they grow or change. Dialogue and writing are worth 1 point, considering how natural, clever, or emotional the script is. Acting gets 1 point, based on the performance of both main and guest actors. Direction and cinematography are worth 1 point, looking at how the episode is visually presented and how well it tells the story through images. Music and sound also get 1 point, since the score plays a huge part in building emotion and atmosphere. Emotional impact is worth 0.75 points, based on how much the episode made me feel or stuck with me. Pacing and structure are also 0.75 points, depending on how well the episode flows and balances its scenes. Finally, themes and meaning are worth 1 point, for episodes that explore deeper ideas or messages.
At the beginning of each review, you will see the full breakdown of the score across these categories, but not every part will have its own written explanation. I will only comment on the areas that stood out or felt especially important to avoid repeating myself and to keep each review focused. Please note that the score is just one part of the overall review.

Just so you know, I won’t always be reviewing the episodes in chronological order. I like to jump around depending on what feels right to watch and write about next!
